This educational session will highlight the potential quality of care initiatives toward HIV treatment, a public health priority. Epidemiological data from the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) will be reviewed to describe the HIV epidemic in the United States including communities disproportionately affected. The interplay of social determinants of health and the health disparities they create in vulnerable populations of PLWH will be discussed. Clinical and economic consequences of suboptimal care in PLWH will be described. Potential managed care/clinical initiatives will be reviewed.

Learning Objectives::

At the completion of this activity, participants should be able to:
  1. Describe the burden of illness in people living with HIV (PLWH) with consideration to the current epidemiological landscape data from the CDC.
  2. Understand how social determinants of health create disparities in vulnerable populations of PLWH.
  3. Describe the select clinical and economic consequences of suboptimal care in PLWH.
  4. Gain new perspectives on the role of managed care in maintaining high-quality care opportunities through education and patient engagement programs, and other ways to address suboptimal care.
