Donald Nichols, Ph.D. is a principal economist on the Health Policy and Systems Research team at Genentech. Dr. Nichols has over 20 years of health services research experience on projects involving program evaluations, demonstration designs, payment methodologies, performance measures, and economic modeling. Currently, he analyzes policies and programs (e.g., 340B program, step therapy protocols, and drug payment reform) that influence patient access to drug therapies and innovations. He also studies their impact on costs, health care outcomes, and innovation.
Prior to joining Genentech, Dr. Nichols worked at research organizations such as IMPAQ International and RTI International. At these organization, he designed and led evaluations of the Office of Rural Health Policy’s (ORHP) Frontier Community Health Care Network Coordination Grant, the State of Maryland’s Multi-Payer Patient-Centered Medical Home Program, and the Centers for Medicare & Medicaid Services’ (CMS) implementation of the Medicare Severity Diagnosis Related Group (MS- DRG) payment system, Acute Care Episode (ACE) demonstration, and Multi-Payer Advanced Primary Care Practice (MAPCP) Demonstration. Dr. Nichols was also previously on the faculty of Washington University in St. Louis, where he taught courses in health economics and econometrics.
